Philip Wm. Spicksley

Registered Independent Celebrant and Executive Chairman of the Association of Independent Celebrants
I focus on providing high-quality service and customer satisfaction and will do everything I can to exceed your expectations. I have over 10 years’ experience of conducting civil ceremonies, designing and writing personal services that are unique to the event which is being celebrated.

Unlike most registrars who tend to work from a few ‘readymade’ templates – I am proud to say that I start with a blank sheet of paper and design a completely bespoke service – just for you, your family and guests.

Without doubt, this unique approach brings everyone together – My service transforms a room full of individuals into a family unit.

Please contact me today to find out how I can add something special and meaningful to any family occasion.

Civil Wedding Celebrations

In an ever increasing secular society more and more couples are opting for a celebration wedding ceremony.
My celebration ceremonies are written and unique to you as the special couple. Promises and exchanging of ring words can be chosen by you and you can have the opportunity of selecting your promises or composing your own words.
The ceremonies can be carried out at a suitable location chosen by you to make your day special. The ceremony is carried out following a formal civil ceremony held at a Register Office.  This format is based on the French tradition, where all weddings by law have to take place in the Register Office and are then followed by a ceremony in the church or hotel afterwards.

By celebrating the marriage in this manner, you are enabled to invite more guests than is normally permitted to attend a register office wedding.

Where I work.

I live in North Lincolnshire where I deliver bespoke ceremonies in all kinds of venues. I mainly work across all of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire – but I am very happy to travel further afield, in the UK, or abroad.

Where to hold a ceremony.

You can hold your celebration at the location of your choice including:

  • Open air weddings
  • In your own garden
  • Home
  • Restaurants
  • Hotels
  • On the Beach
  • Sports Grounds

This type of celebration is ideal for those who do not want a church wedding and don’t want the expense of a big fancy hotel, preferring a more informal celebration in their own garden or a smaller function suite.

If the happy couple are blessed with children from a previous relationship, then I can design a ceremony which is not only a wedding celebration but also encompasses the whole family. By including the children the celebration will be one of cementing the family together.

If you have a child who has not been christened or named. Why not have a joint ceremony for the wedding and baby naming.

Celebrations following weddings abroad.
Nowadays it is popular for couples to fly off to a foreign country to get married. When they return to the UK they often feel the necessity of having a blessing ceremony to which they can invite all their family and friends who missed out on the wedding. I can design a ceremony for this occasion. The ceremony can take place early evening and be followed by a party.

Wedding Ceremonies following a Register Office ceremony.
Why not make your day special for your guests, I am taking bookings where the bride and groom do not tell their guests that the wedding is being celebrated before the main wedding reception. The few guests that go to the Register Office and the main body of guests at the reception are kept in secret about a more personalised ceremony conducted by me prior to the reception. This allows for a perfect start to the reception and allows all your guests to be included in your special day, rather than just the ones who are able to attend the Register Office.

Perhaps a Register Office cannot provide a Registrar to go out to a licensed for weddings venue at the time you want to hold your ceremony. I am taking bookings when Registrars are in this predicament. In these circumstances, couples have continued with the booking of the venue and engaged me to conduct a ceremony following a Registry Office ceremony a day or two before.

Bookings are also being taken when a couple want to have their wedding in the evening and follow through with an evening function instead of having a full afternoon and evening party.

Remember the choice is yours.
You have a ceremony designed by you in the comfort of your home, hold it wherever you want and at whatever time you want.

My fees are competitive to those offered by the Registrars Office. You do not need to book a registrar for a civil wedding celebration. You need only do so if you are getting married at the location.

Here you can create the content that will be used within the module.

Renewal of Wedding Vows

Have you a special anniversary coming along?
Do you want to have a short ceremony, bespoke written for your party.
Why not engage me to conduct a short but meaningful ceremony to renew your wedding vows in front of all your guests.
The ceremony  can be as long or short as you wish.  Perhaps you may want to  invite your friends and family to an evening function.  Start the evening with a short and meaningful ceremony.
Some Registry Offices do not offer Renewal of Vows ceremonies, there is no legal standing to a Renewals Ceremony therefore a ceremony can be held wherever you wish and at a time to suit your plans.

Planning your ceremony.

Having received a request for a ceremony, I arrange a suitable meeting during which time I can meet you the couple and discuss your special day. Each ceremony is a new canvas to paint.  A blank canvas to draw and design a unique ceremony just for you.
The ceremony can be as long as you wish,  you can include whatever content you want.  I do not restrict you to non-religious content. If you want a hymn or prayer then you are welcome to include it. It is nice to talk about you as a couple,  explaining in a short address, where and how you met,  what your common interests are and perhaps include members of your family who have supported you in the planning of the day.
A joint wedding and baby naming ceremony may be written for those couples who may wish to name a child during the same service.
I can assist you with providing sample wedding and ring exchange vows and words or you may wish to write your own.  It is always nice when a couple state their own vows which have come from the heart.
Remember it is your ceremony,  I am there to assist you  plan, design and enjoy the day.

Ceremonies within a ceremony

A nice way to make your ceremony extra special is to include a Ceremony in a Ceremony, this can be by including one of the following:
  1. A Sand Ceremony
  2. A Wine Ceremony
  3. A Handfasting
  4. Jumping over the broom.
Sand Ceremony.
This is a short ceremony where different coloured sands are poured together to symbolise  the sharing of love between two people,  if more colours are used then it may symbolise a family bonding together as one.
Wine Ceremony
This is a similar ceremony to symbolise the sharing of love by pouring different coloured wine (red and white) together.
Handfastings are commonly used in Wiccan and Pagan ceremonies. Today the handfasting is more literal: a couple will bind their hands together during the wedding ceremony (before, during, or after reciting their vows), often to symbolize their connection and devotion to one another.
Jumping over the broom.
This dates back to the times when marriage was celebrated not in a formal way but in a more informal manner when the couple held hands and jumped over a broom laid on the floor.   The term ‘Living over the brush’ originates from a couple sealing their love for each other in this way.

Alternative Wedding Ideas

Baby Naming and Wedding Ceremony all in one.
Cheryl and Philip recently asked me to carry out a joint ceremony at a hotel in Barton upon Humber.  Having married each other at the local registry office following the birth of their child Natasha,  they decided that they wanted a full wedding ceremony to include all their family and friends. We celebrated their marriage with an individual ceremony written for them and conducted at the hotel.  They celebrated their wedding by renewing their vows and commitment to each other before we listened to a piece of music and then celebrated the naming of their lovely baby girl. At the end of their joint ceremony, they walked out of the room as a family with mum carrying the baby.  This was a lovely, individual ceremony which was designed for them, taking their wishes into account.
Renewal of Vows.
Tracy and Richard celebrated their silver wedding by hiring the function suite at the Royal Hotel in Scunthorpe.  They invited their many friends and family, including as many as possible from their wedding day all those years ago. They told their guests that they were just having a party.  They surprised them by holding a renewal of vows ceremony, in which their children took part as one accompanied Tracy into the room and their other two children carried their rings in.
Evening Wedding.
Sue and John wanted an evening wedding at Arties Mill in Brigg.  This was carried out at 6 pm and followed by a formal reception to run on into the evening.
Garden Wedding.
Emily and Ian have planned their wedding to be held in the family garden.  They wish to have an outdoor wedding followed by a marquee reception.  We are planning a bespoke ceremony which will be designed and conducted to their instructions

Just a few of the many kind words written by happy couples, following a Civil Wedding Ceremony conducted by me.

Wedding Burringham Village Hall

Hi Phil,
Just wanted to say a huge Thank You for conducting the ceremony at our Wedding celebration. The service was perfect, the words were just beautiful. There were some very emotional moments but touches of humour too. You really listened to what we wanted & made it very personal to us. The perfect start to a perfect day. Thank you.

Trudi Webster

My husband to be’ booked our wedding as a surprise, he arranged a celebrant met her and went through what he wanted. He then spent 4 months phoning her trying to get a response and no reply..
He decided to tell me about the surprise of which I was delighted but a little concerned to say the least about the lack of celebrant.
We went on the Internet and watched a youtube video of Phil Spicksley and phoned him and arranged a meeting.

He answered our first call and arrived on time, we were a little nervous and joked about the celebrant pimpanel. Phil was very easy to talk to we had a coffee and a chat and he gave us a great deal of help in choosing the vows and readings and the sort of ceremony we wanted.  Phil visited us a second time to make sure we were happy with everything.

When the big day came we were both quite nervous but Phil had a very calming effect on everything and he took control of the event without being controlling just in charge in a very respectful way.  We had a lovely day and all thanks to Phil Spicksley, I would certainly recommend him to anyone he was excellent.
Kindest regards
Trudi Webster

Garden Wedding

Thank you so much for Sunday. The Ceremony was lovely and everyone said how nice and personal and relaxed it was.Sorry I didn’t get a chance to speak to you, but as soon as it was over – that was it, our feet didn’t touch the ground, but thank you again.

20's themed Wedding Celebration at Cave Castle

Hi Philip,
Thank you very much for conducting our ceremony and giving us the opportunity to do what we wanted, it was much better than we had hoped and ran so smoothly, so many people thanked us for inviting them and felt honoured to be at such an intimate ceremony (Obviously we were just as pleased they were there).  I was most uptight just before the big entrance but that dissolved into pure enjoyment when you started addressing the guests with our story and then running through the rest of the proceedings, as you know we were married earlier in the day in the register office, and the registrar was most annoyed with my lateness (15 minutes) and told Steve off!, she corrected my speech 3 times on the same sentence for ‘legal reasons’ which was most annoying as the rest of the party said I had said it properly anyway, (I would have felt humiliated in front of the 100 guests we had in the evening if that had happened then)
Anyway thanks once again, we may be back to you about a christening appointment in the near future!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this be like a proper wedding?

The ceremony will be a ‘Celebration Ceremony’  it includes all the elements of a Wedding Ceremony but I cannot pronounce you ‘Married’.  There is no need for guests to be aware of the slight differences that have to be considered.

Where can the ceremony be conducted?

Because this isn’t a legal ceremony, you are free to chose any place,  I have conducted ceremonies on the beach, football grounds, gardens and even in stately homes.  The choice is yours to make.

What are the limitations to the ceremony?

There are no limitations to your bespoke ceremony,  All my clients are individuals and their ceremony is  unique.  It is a blank canvas on which we can, together, paint their picture of a perfect wedding.  I provide each couple with a resource booklet containing readings, vows and ring word samples.  If you wish to write your own vows there is also help with that too.  Most of my ceremonies include a ceremony within the main ceremony such as a ‘Unity Candle’ or ‘Sand Ceremony’.

Do we receive a copy of the ceremony?

Following the ceremony I provide a copy of the ceremony, printed in a booklet presentation folder,  a certificate (if one is signed) and a copy of a DVD if the ceremony is recorded by me.

What are the legal requirements?

My ceremonies are a Celebration of the legal marriage that has previously taken place at a Registry Office.  It is the formal ceremony at the Registry Office that is the legal part of the marriage.  This can be carried out at any time before your ‘Celebration Ceremony’ conducted by me.  Each Registry Office has to provide a basic marriage service which usually costs around £50 plus a fee for checking the identity of the couple.   However, I must stress that few will see the difference between the ‘Celebration Ceremony’ and one conducted by a Registrar other than my ceremonies are more personal.

How is our ceremony put together?

When you book my services I secure the date with you.  I like to meet you in person and listen to what you would like your ceremony to include.  After providing you with a copy of my Insurance and the required legal contract forms we start to plan your unique ceremony.  It can include things like a Sand Ceremony, Unity Candle, hand fasting or even jumping over the broom.  Using the skills I have from over 10 years experience we can mould a ceremony that you will treasure in your memory.  If you wish to have a rehearsal then this can be arranged either at the time of booking or nearer the day.   I ensure that a full copy of your ceremony is sent to you before the ceremony so that you ensure it is just what you have asked for.

Where I work.

I live in North East Lincolnshire where I deliver bespoke ceremonies in all kinds of venues. I mainly work across all of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire – but I am very happy to travel further afield, in the UK, or abroad.

Why should I use a Phil Spicksley as my Celebrant?
I have been a Celebrant now for 10 years,  I have also been a member of the Association of Independent Celebrants for all of that time too.  I have been the President of the Association for over 4 years.  During this time I have gained much experience especially in relation to the ever-changing face of Civil Ceremonies.  I have been consulted by the Government in relation to changes in the Marriage Act, but more importantly, as a member of the AOIC I have full Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance. This is more important that you think. Lots of Celebrants work without any insurance. The AOIC ensure that all members have full insurance in the event of mistakes, non-arrival or circumstances beyond the Celebrants control.  I also have to act within the constraints of the AOIC Codes of Practice which ensure that all clients have the right to report any problems to the AOIC for investigation. All these elements of working within the framework of the AOIC ensures that you receive the best professional service possible.

All fees include a meeting to plan the event, the service of writing the ceremony and agreeing to the content via email.
My Fees start from as little as:
£250 for a Baby naming in North Lincolnshire and surrounding area.
£390 for a Wedding or Renewal of Vows Ceremony in North Lincolnshire and surrounding areas.
Additional costs will be calculated depending on the travel distance and whether or not additional meetings are required i.e. rehearsals.
